Ankle boots and boots at RunColors
Chelsea boots and ankle boots are the most comfortable option for ankle-high footwear: you slip them on in one go, and the elasticated panels at the sides hold your foot securely without the need for laces. In this category, you’ll find Dr. Martens 2976 in a range of leather finishes, Australian Blundstones, renowned for their durability, and Caterpillars in a more work-oriented, rugged style. These are the sort of boots you wear from October to April.
Dr. Martens 2976
The 2976 is a Dr Martens take on the Chelsea boot: it features a yellow welt, an AirWair sole and the same leather as the 1460 model. It is available in smooth leather, in plain colourways, as a platform version and with insulation. The elasticated side panels will settle over time, and the boot will become easier to slip on – this is normal and does not mean the upper has stretched.
Blundstone and Caterpillar
Blundstone is an Australian work boot that has become an urban classic – with a simple, rounded silhouette, a comfortable insole and a design built to withstand everyday wear and tear. Caterpillar brings a heavier, workwear-inspired feel: a thicker sole, sturdier leather and a distinctive tread pattern. Both brands cope well with autumn conditions.
For autumn and winter
Ankle boots are at their best during the cold, wet months – it’s worth waterproofing the leather once a season, especially for suede and nubuck styles. If you’re looking for boots with proper insulation, have a look in the winter section; if you prefer laces and a higher upper, check out the combat boots section.
Chelsea boots and lace-up boots – what is the difference?
Chelsea boots slip on thanks to elasticated panels at the sides and have no fastenings – hence their clean, unbroken line. An ankle boot is laced or fastened, reaches a similar height, but allows the upper to be adjusted, which is important for those with a higher instep or a wider calf. In practice, Chelsea boots are quicker to put on, whilst ankle boots offer a better fit.
