Mary Jane shoes at RunColors
The Mary Jane is a style recognisable by one detail: a strap running across the instep, fastened with a buckle. Historically a child’s shoe, it is now one of the most popular styles for women – the chunky-soled version looks bold and modern, whilst the flat version has a classic look. In our shop, you’ll find it mainly in styles by Dr. Martens and Converse.
Dr. Martens – leather and platform
Dr. Martens Mary Jane styles combine an instep strap with the brand’s distinctive footwear shapes. Compare flatter and platform versions, materials, stitching and closures. Leather can soften with wear, while the strap helps adjust the fit; check the individual model’s sizing and construction.
Converse and lighter versions
Converse has its own take on the design: canvas or leather, a rubber sole and a strap instead of laces. It’s the lightest and most casual option in this category – perfect for spring and summer, with dresses and cropped trousers.
What to wear it with and how to choose the right size
Mary Janes look best with the ankle exposed or with a contrasting-colour sock – this is a deliberate choice, not a coincidence. The strap can be adjusted using several holes, so the shoe accommodates slight variations in foot circumference. The same rule applies to Dr. Martens models as to others: only whole sizes are available; if your foot is ‘half a size’, you should usually go down a size.
