Flip-flops are divided into three types: anatomical styles that you can wear all day, leather styles with a more robust, urban look, and lightweight plastic models – for the beach, the swimming pool and around the house. Birkenstock – anatomical insole

The Arizona is the brand’s most recognisable model: two adjustable straps and a cork and latex footbed that moulds to the shape of your foot over time. The insole features arch support, a heel cup and a raised arch under the toes. These are flip-flops you can actually walk around town in, rather than just wearing them to walk from a sun lounger to the water.

Dr. Martens and Melissa

Dr. Martens make flip-flops in the same way as their boots – from leather, with yellow stitching and a sturdy sole, so they keep their shape and look more robust than typical summer footwear. Melissa is a Brazilian brand that moulds its shoes from Melflex, a patented, fully recyclable material – lightweight, flexible and with a distinctive scent of balloon rubber.

Size and use

Birkenstocks come in two widths – narrow and regular – and it’s worth bearing this in mind when ordering; your foot should fit within the outline of the footbed without protruding beyond the edge. The cork insole doesn’t cope well with prolonged exposure to water, so it’s better to choose rubber models for the swimming pool and other water activities.
