This category covers everything that is carried on the shoulder or in the hand: small bags for a mobile phone and a wallet, classic shopper bags, laptop bags and large travel duffles. The range is centred on Topo Designs and Fjällräven, complemented by Stanley bags. What they all have in common is sturdy materials and construction that retain their shape even after several months.

On a day-to-day basis

Smaller shoulder bags are ideal when a rucksack would be overkill – they hold a mobile phone, wallet, keys and bits and bobs. The Fjällräven Kånken shoppers and tote bags are flat-bottomed designs that can hold a laptop and documents. The adjustable strap allows you to carry the bag either over your shoulder or diagonally across your body.

For the trip

Topo Designs’ duffle bags and travel bags have capacities of 30 litres and above, reinforced bases and handles that allow them to be carried by hand or on the back. The heavyweight fabric can withstand being thrown onto the baggage conveyor belt. It’s worth noting the dimensions – some models fall within the hand luggage allowance.

How to choose the right size

Start with the largest item you want to carry: a 13- or 15-inch laptop, a bottle, or an A4 folder. We provide the internal dimensions and capacity for each product. A bag with a single large compartment is lighter and has more capacity, whilst one with compartments is more practical when you’re carrying lots of small items.

Materials

Heavyweight nylon and polyester are hard-wearing and easy to wipe clean with a damp cloth. Cotton canvas has a more understated look, but gets dirty more quickly and does not cope well with rain. Leather trims require periodic waterproofing, particularly on straps that come into contact with clothing.
