Rucksacks at RunColors

This is the broadest category in our accessories section. It features two brands with a distinct character: the Swedish brand Fjällräven, whose Kånken is one of the most recognisable rucksacks in the world, and the American brand Topo Designs, which combines 1980s aesthetics with modern materials. Both prioritise durability and simple design over an excess of features.

Fjällräven Kånken

The Kånken was created in 1978 as a rucksack for Swedish schoolchildren – it was designed to take the strain off their backs and hold textbooks in a horizontal position. To this day, it retains the same square shape, Vinylon F fabric and a seat tucked away in a pocket on the back. It is available in Mini, Classic, Laptop and Totepack versions; these differ in capacity and whether they feature a laptop compartment.

Topo Designs

Topo Designs is based in Colourado and is known for its bold colour combinations, leather reinforcements and heavyweight nylon. The Rover Pack and Daypack are city rucksacks with capacities of 15–20 litres, whilst the Travel Bag is designed for travel. The finishes are noticeably more technical than those of the Kånken.

What is the capacity?

Up to 15 litres is a rucksack for the city and essentials. 16–22 litres will hold a laptop, a change of clothes and a packed lunch – this is the most versatile size for everyday use. Above 25 litres, we’re looking at rucksacks for weekends and trips. For each model, we specify the capacity in litres and the dimensions of the laptop compartment.

Materials and care

The Vinylon F used in the Kånken is water-resistant but not waterproof – it’s worth having a rain cover for prolonged periods of rain. Clean it with a damp cloth; never put it in the washing machine, as the water washes out the water-repellent treatment. Topo Designs nylon is more abrasion-resistant and easier to clean; it’s a good idea to wipe the leather parts with a protective treatment once a season.
