For sizes up to 28, three things are key: a flexible sole that doesn’t restrict the foot, a lightweight design, and a fastening system that a child can manage on their own. That’s why Velcro fastenings and slip-on uppers dominate this category, rather than laces. Reima designs with the Scandinavian climate in mind: the models in the Tec range feature a membrane and taped seams, whilst the Hallava is a lightweight transitional boot. All models feature a flexible sole and a wide toe box that gives the toes plenty of room. It’s the brand you turn to when your child spends a lot of time outdoors, whatever the weather.

How to choose the right size for your child

At this age, feet grow by roughly one size every six months, so a 8–12 mm gap at the toes is standard – but no more, as a shoe that’s too big disrupts your gait. The easiest way to measure your foot is in the evening, on a sheet of paper, by tracing around it with a pencil held vertically. We provide the size guide and insole measurement for each product.

For nursery and for playing outside

It’s worth having two pairs: a lightweight pair for nursery and a heavier, waterproof pair for walks. A child can put on Velcro shoes more quickly than laced ones, which really does make mornings run more smoothly.
