Sizes 28–35 mark the point at which a child starts to have their own opinions about shoes. That’s why, in this category, alongside Reima’s technical models and Native’s waterproof shoes, we stock children’s versions of the sneakers that older children are familiar with: New Balance, Nike Air and Air Jordan. All are designed to accommodate growing feet – lighter and more flexible than adult footwear.

Children’s sneakers

New Balance, Nike and Air Jordan produce children’s versions of their most popular models – with the same colour schemes, but lighter in weight and with softer soles. Some come with Velcro fastenings instead of laces, making them easier for children to put on by themselves. These are shoes for everyday wear and for school, not for sports.

Reima and Native – for rain and mud

Reima’s Tec range features a membrane and taped seams, ensuring the shoes can withstand long outings in wet weather. Native shoes are lightweight, one-piece shoes made from EVA – they can simply be washed under the tap, which is a real bonus when you’ve got children. Both brands stand up well to heavy use.

How much growing room, and how often should you check the fit?

At this age, feet grow more slowly than in younger children, but it’s still worth checking them every 2–3 months. A 10 mm gap at the front of the shoe is safe; sneakers can be chosen slightly looser, but not at the expense of heel support.
