Crewneck sweatshirts at RunColors
A crew-neck is a jumper with a round neckline and no hood – the simplest and most versatile type of mid-layer. It doesn’t add bulk at the nape of the neck, so it sits better under a jacket and against a shirt collar than a hoodie does. In this category, you’ll find both classic sweatshirts made from fleece and warmer knitted styles, mainly from Kaotiko and New Balance.
Crewneck – why it works
The lack of a hood means a clean line across the shoulders and neck, giving the jumper a neater look and making it easier to put on. It works well under a down jacket, under a coat, and with an unbuttoned shirt underneath – a combination that’s one of the most popular styles today. The ribbing at the neckline should be tightly knitted so that it doesn’t stretch out after a few washes.
Kaotiko and knitwear
As well as classic tracksuit tops, Kaotiko also stocks knitted jumpers and hoodies – in jacquard weaves, with geometric patterns and in washed-out colours. This is a warmer option for winter, which also looks less sporty. It goes well with jeans and heavy boots.
Layers: what to wear underneath, what to wear on top
A crew-neck works best as a mid-layer: a T-shirt or long-sleeved top underneath, and a jacket on top. If you’re wearing it on its own, choose a heavier weight so it doesn’t show through. With knitted fabrics, bear in mind that wool keeps you warm even when it’s slightly damp – unlike cotton.
Size and care
Sweatshirts are usually bought in your usual size; if opting for an oversized fit, some people go down a size to avoid the garment being too baggy. Wash knitted garments by hand or on a wool cycle, and always dry them flat – if hung on a hanger whilst wet, knitted garments will stretch irreversibly.
